The top menu in Lost Admiral Returns lets you access all other parts of the game, including special options such as browsing this manual, going online to update the game, or participate in the LAR discussion forums.

When you first start playing LAR, a quick start button for the tutorials will be shown at the top of this menu.  Use this button to quickly play the four tutorials.  Play these tutorials first to quickly boost your officer rank while learning how to play the game, and improve your future rewards as a result.

The major options for this menu are:

• Start a battle with the Battles menu.
• View your Officer's rank and history via the Officer menu.
• Play the extended "Save the Admiral" Campaign via the STA menu.
• Resume previously saved battles via a "quick restore" button, when available.
• And a quick start button for any tutorials you have not yet played.

When LAR detects that an update to the game is available, an "Update LAR now" button will appear on this menu.  LAR will usually detect new versions after you post or view high scores online.  You can also check for updates at any time using the "Update LAR over the Internet" option described next under the "Info" button.

Another whole set of special options are available using the "Info" button:

• Change the game's sound, graphics, or interface options.
• View this manual in your browser.
• Go online to visit the LAR discussion forums.
• Check for Updates for LAR over the Internet.
• Reset the game tips for use with new players.
• Email Fogstone Games with questions
• Go online and purchase LAR, if you have not already.
• Other special options will be added to this button from time to time.

If you have recently purchased the BASIC version of LAR, you will also have the option of going online and upgrading to the DELUXE version, and to apply any upgrades you purchase for LAR via a button on this first menu.

The first time you run LAR, you will be prompted to create an officer. Enter a name that you prefer to be known by when playing the game.

Also, the first time you run LAR, there will be several graphics files automatically generated by the game. This will only happen the first time you run the program.

Your first step should be to play the tutorials!  Each tutorial gives you an excellent overview of not just how to play LAR, but every aspect of the customizable interface for each part of the game.  Your officer rank will greatly benefit from doing these quick, useful tutorials.

After finishing the tutorials, you should tackle smaller battles such as on Map #1 or Map #9, perhaps "auto-buying" units during the start of battles until you are more familiar with the way ships move and fight in LAR.

The manual has various chapters dedicated to all parts of the game, and new sections will be added periodically as new material and updates are made to Lost Admiral Returns.
